ABSTRACT
A certain disillusionment followed the euphoric mood induced by the discovery of the predicted meson and the successes of quantum electrodynamics. The number of newly discovered particles continued to increase, and in strong interactions, quantum field theory was less predictive than had been hoped. A new way forward seemed necessary.
