ABSTRACT

The planning of a geophysical survey varies with objective, geology, terrain, location, area coverage, accessibility, cultural interference, type of survey, geophysical method, equipment, expertise and time and financial resource available. It is tailored to suit the specific requirements. There could be a variety of objectives for geophysical surveys like locating suitable sites for water well drilling, mapping of aquifers at regional and local scales, identifying fractured zones, defining areas and sites suitable for managed aquifer recharge, delineating groundwater salinity interfaces and contamination, locating sites for monitoring wells etc. and accordingly the planning changes. Incorporating details of planning for all types of geophysical surveys and for various objectives of groundwater exploration is not possible and also beyond the scope. Some relevant aspects of commonly used surface geophysical methods are discussed here.
