ABSTRACT

The Alzheimer Association has estimated that Alzheimer’s disease (AD) affects about 5.3 million Americans. More than half of AD patients receive treatment and specialized care. AD accounts for 50-70% percent of dementia cases. Other types of dementia include vascular dementia, mixed dementia, and dementia with Lewy bodies. In western Norway, the analysis of dementia cases from 2005 to 2007 revealed that 65% had AD dementia, 20% had dementia with Lewy bodies, 5.6% had vascular dementia, 5.6% had Parkinson’s disease with dementia, 2% had frontotemporal dementia, and 1.5% had alcoholic dementia.1
