ABSTRACT
A book (Gerday and Glansdorff 2007) has been devoted to what have conveniently been termed extremophiles. It deals with organisms subject to a range of extreme physical environments-temperature, salinity, pH, and pressure-and contains an extensive bibliography of the relevant organisms. The journal Extremophiles has also been devoted to them. In the following account, emphasis is placed on metabolic aspects of such organisms.
