ABSTRACT

Ionic liquids (ILs) represent a novel class of solvents: they are molten salts with melting points below 100°C, composed only of ions, in which at least one ion is weakly coordinating. In some ILs, only the cation is weakly coordinating, in some only the anion; rarely, both ions are weakly coordinating. Many ILs are even liquid at room temperature, the so-called room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs).
