ABSTRACT

Average annual groundwater resource in India is estimated as 396 billion cubic meter. As per the norms, this replenishable resource is only to be used to maintain the balance between annual recharge and annual draft. However, to meet the increasing demands for various activities, groundwater is being mined from below static levels without taking natural recharge into consideration. Because of this, the water levels are declining in many parts of India resulting in the failure of existing wells. This is not only adversely affecting agricultural production but is also leading to a shortage of drinking water.
