ABSTRACT

Th e type species of this is genus is the common southern African estuarine sand-dweller P. knysnaensis Smith, 1935 (Fig. 2.3.2a) which occurs in Namaqualand, Agulhas bank and Natal ecoregions (Hoese, 1986; Froese and Pauly, 2009 (SAIAB entries only)). Depending on the generic status of the tropical “Gobius” biocellatus Valenciennes, 1987 sometimes a second species is classifi ed by some authors as Psammogobius (see Glossogobius account in this chapter), which is recorded only sporadically at the northeasternmost limit of the region treated here (Hoese, 1986; Froese and Pauly, 2009 (SAIAB entries only).
