ABSTRACT

Abstract The following chapter elaborates on the research framework of this study. It starts with an overview of the (historically) observed morphodynamic behavior in estuaries. This ranges from phenomenological observations to empirical equilibrium relationships and the concept of an ‘ideal’ estuary. These observations emphasize the importance of improving process knowledge on morphodynamics in estuarine systems. Within that framework, the need, possibilities and importance of morphodynamic modeling techniques are addressed.
