ABSTRACT

The consumer digital infrastructure (CDI) consists of a) mass-market digital devices (such as desktop, laptop, and tablet computers, game consoles,

media players, smartphones, and VTRs) and b) the communication networks that connect them, most notably the Internet. Driven largely by the requirements of Internet streaming video and 3-D graphical games, consumer products have become very powerful. A typical current PC has 4 GB RAM, 1 TB disk, and a 1 TeraFLOPS GPU. Home Internet connections are on the order of 10 Mbps, increasing to 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps as optical fiber is deployed to homes over the next few years.
