ABSTRACT

This chapter explores an entertainment application using the Focal Point three-dimensional (3D) Audio technology to place sound position under control of a performer utilizing a pointing glove, wand, or touchpad. It discusses future possibilities, including interaction via individual headphones. Focal Point 3D Audio is a pioneer company in real-time binaural processing. Humans clearly hear in 3D: sounds are localized above, below, in any direction, and at any distance. Binaural hearing, as natural 3D hearing is known, also uniquely conveys intimacy or urgency when sounds come close. Advances in signal processing technology together with improved understanding of binaural hearing have made it possible to artificially create the perception of natural, 3D hearing. Binaural processing technology, economical, allows 3D sound to be created and changed in real time. Interactive 3D sound motion effects could be used in live performance: individually, as part of a personal stereo player: in large-audience stadium events such as baseball games.
