ABSTRACT
In later chapters we will use some simple ideas from group theory to enumerate symmetric colorings of the patterns discussed in the first third of this book. In this chapter we tell you how to find generators and relations for the symmetry group of a pattern from its signature. The proof that the resulting presentations are correct is (of course!) postponed until Chapter 14.
