ABSTRACT

Goji is a shrub or small tree, typically 0.8 to 2 m (2-6½ ft.) tall, but the viny (arching or climbing) branches can extend to 6 m or 19 ft. The plants can form large, tangled clumps. The older branches are thorny at the nodes. The leaves are up to 7 cm (3 in.) long and 3.5 cm (1.4 in.) wide (they tend to be much smaller on older branches) and are arranged alternately or in fascicles. The lavender, purple, or pinkish §owers are solitary or in small clusters. The §ower is funnel shaped, the closed funnel portion 8 to 10 mm (approximately 1/3 in.) long, and the widest part of the §ower up to 1.5 cm (0.6 in.) across. The oblong or egg-shaped berries are up to 2 cm (0.8 in.) in length, usually

red (fresh red berries tend to become blackish as they dry), and contain 4 to 20 yellow-brown seeds approximately 2 mm (less than 1/10th in.) long.
