ABSTRACT

Many artistic patterns and designs have their source in geometry and exemplify a close relationship between mathematics and art. Designs that repeat one or more basic geometric figures will be the focus here. Simple examples include the patterns of a square tile floor, a brick wall, or a honeycomb. These patterns are examples of what is called a tessellation or tiling. The beauty and complexity of more elaborate tilings are illustrated by the Alhambra mosaics and the drawings of M. C. Escher.
