ABSTRACT
Seasonal changes in the concentration of melatonin and hormones that control the development and maturation of gonads in vertebrates are a basic indicator in the annual reproductive cycle of seasonally breeding animals. By acting on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, these hormones synchronize animals with the environment by determining phases of the sexual cycle and the optimum time for breeding.
