ABSTRACT

This chapter establishes the basis for nutrient timing initiatives aimed at maximizing protein utilization by the body and by the muscle for optimizing health, performance, and recovery. As an essential macronutrient, protein is dened and its role in the body and in the diet presented with specic regard for human health and performance. Following a brief overview of protein as a nutrient, protein digestion, absorption, and utilization are presented. The remainder of the chapter focuses on the role of amino acids in muscle growth and recovery. In this context, the function of amino acids in muscle recovery following resistance and endurance exercise is introduced as a foundation for further chapters that target specic mechanisms and practical application of this material.
