ABSTRACT

The biological treatment system starts with a cell. The cell looks a bit like a deformed oval, a deformed fuzzy oval. It is not one cell but many that do the work of biological treatment. Around the cell exterior is a membrane. Food has to pass that membrane to get into the cell so it can be used for energy. Around the outside of the cell is a protein/extracellular enzyme layer that helps the cell to align the chemicals so that they can pass through the membrane and get into the body. To accomplish this, the cell has to hydrolyze the chemicals and align them so that they will pass the cell membrane. Overall, it kind of looks something like in Figure 5.1.
