ABSTRACT

For years, it has been generally acknowledged that both what and how much an athlete eats can affect exercise performance. However, the time the athlete eats relative to when the workout occurs can also affect the extent of the physiological adaptations. In order to run faster, jump farther, and simply improve athletic performance, the athlete needs to optimize adaptation and enhance recovery. How is this accomplished? This chapter is intended to explain exactly that: to teach what to eat, when to eat, and how much to eat so that adaptation and recovery can be optimized.
