ABSTRACT

Self-healing materials are polymers, metals, ceramics, and their composites that when damaged through thermal, mechanical, ballistic, or other means have the ability to heal and restore their material to its original set of properties. Ghosh (2009a) de˜ned the self-healing as the ability of a material to heal damages automatically and autonomously. Few materials intrinsically posses this ability, and self-healing capacity in manmade materials generally cannot be obtained without an external trigger. As schematically described in Figure 11.1, self-healing can be autonomic (or extrinsic) or nonautonomic (or intrinsic).
