ABSTRACT

This chapter presents minor applications of pollen studies under various captions such as Palynotaxonomy, Copropalynology followed by the role of palynology in environmental pollution. Taxonomic studies of pollen is an important aspect of palynology. Pollen is classified on morphological grounds. Pollen classification is of necessity tied to the classification of the plant producing it. Pollen is specific to the plant, which produces it, so the plant or species can be identified by its pollen. Pollen grains contain the male gametes required to achieve fertilization. The process of transfer of pollen grains to the receptive stigmas of female flowers is known as pollination. The contents of pollen grains such as cytoplasm and the nuclei containing the genetic material need to be protected, particularly during their journey through the air. In general, the pollen needs to be protected against dehydration and physical strenuous conditions.
