ABSTRACT

Melissopalynology is one of the applied branches of palynology which deals with the study of pollen in honey. In their excellent review of work on melissopalynology, R. Jones and V. M. Bryant had indicated that the sweet taste of honey had attracted the early primate ancestors of humans and later humans too. Honey being a nature’s gift derived from the hard work of honeybees and plant pollen attracted the attention of users and scientists right from prehistoric times. Pollen analysis of honey is the most important aspect of melissopalynology. The assessment of the resource value of different plant species to bees is a major objective of melissopalynology. In view of the applications of pollen analysis to bee problems, melissopalynology has been gradually assuming considerable importance. Apicultural laboratories in many countries have been developing their permanent reference collections of honey pollen slides.
