ABSTRACT

As space, spatial relations, and heterogeneity were taken into account from the very emergence of landscape ecology, a terminology developed for the types of objects encountered in a landscape. Several studies were undertaken to propose various methods for measurements relating to land. Some studies are presented in this chapter; for additional information, the reader is referred to the exhaustive bibliography (Turner et al., 1991). Geostatistics (Haining, 1990) and geography (Ciceri et al., 1977) are also important sources. The chief applications of these fields are presented in this chapter.
