This chapter draws a brief assessment of change in land use on the planet during the past few centuries. In the second part are presented case studies of localized change on a time scale of a few years. These case studies illustrate the diversity of situations and lead to an analysis of trends to respond primarily to a simple question: Are the trends predictable? Or must we rely on variables external to the landscape structure, on non-ecological factors of organization?
