ABSTRACT

The most natural directions to extend the theory are to include other parts of the game, with the hope of developing new mathematics, or improving Go playing programs, or both.

The results in this book apply most directly to the late-stage endgames. However, the techniques also simplify the analyses of earlier endgame posi tions. For instance, the game trees for the rooms given in Section 4.5 were substantially simplified by chilling, even though most of the games had tem perature exceeding one. Also, the strongest Go players often make moves based on small endgame subtleties long before the endgame arises.
