ABSTRACT

In this paper we will look into the problem of approximating spherical surfaces. The approximation of circles and spheres has received some attention in the past, see for instance [3,4,8,10]. Most of the schemes presented to date use some form of rationals. What we will present below is a piecewise polynomial scheme based on circle approximations. The reason for using polynomials is that there are many existing applications, e.g. CAD systems, that require that all surfaces should be represented as parametric polynomials.
