Educational and Cultural Frameworks

In the Digital Era, all aspects of communicating mathematics are undergoing very rapid changes and it is difficult to make predictions about the future on the basis of present observations. Nonetheless, some things are clear: interactive Internet-based communication of mathematical ideas offers great possibilities for engaging larger and larger audiences in many different ways, for the general public, and for students at all levels. In this chapter, we present some examples of ways to expand communication to these two audiences and we speculate about future developments. The first part of the chapter treats communicating mathematics to the general public, and the second part is a report on an ongoing project developing courseware for Internet-based teaching of undergraduate mathematics courses.
