ABSTRACT
The quotation is from Hardy’s famous A Mathematician's Apology (Hardy 1988, p. 120). But we ought not to forget that it was written during the Second World War by one who always remained a confirmed pacifist. How Hardy would have reacted to the applications of number theory described in this book we can only guess. But one thing is certain: Modern cryptography completely changed our views toward the applicability of number theory.
