For a prescribed value of z the magnitude of the bound (1.15) depends on the value assigned to j?. With ph z again denoted by 8, the ratio of the absolute value of the first neglected term in the series (1.14) to the right-hand side of (1.15) is cos(8-p) - lzl -'a,,(P). For large JzJ, this is approximately cos(8-P). When -a2 < 8 < -a,, we can set p = 0, in which event the ratio is approximately unity for large lzl. which is ideal.
