ABSTRACT

Considering the recent upsurge in the area of probiotic research and since India is being viewed as a global market for probiotics, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recognized the need for regulatory guidelines to hold manufacturers accountable and prevent spurious, ineffective products fl ooding the market with false claims. An ICMR expert group was constituted to propose these guidelines which would be regulated by the food authority. This article summarizes the proposed guidelines which once fi nalized would be regulatory guidelines for future.
