ABSTRACT

When we listen to one of the great compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach-or Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert or any other great composer-what strikes us is the depth of musical expression, the inspired ideas and, perhaps most of all, the consummate workmanship. The internal balance of these works is o en so delicate that changing even a single note generates discord and leaving out a single phrase brings the whole edifi ce to the point of collapse.
