ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we introduce PI-algebras and review some well-known results and techniques, most of which are associated with the structure theory. In this way, the tenor of the exposition is different from that of the subsequent chapters. The emphasis is on matrix algebras and their subalgebras (called representable Pi-algebras).
