ABSTRACT

When Stone ended his term as chairman, the usual process of selecting a replacement went on in administrative secrecy (the department would later change this process). I was asked to accept the position, but was a bit hesitant about taking on administrative work because of the inevitable loss of research time. However, I felt that I understood what Stone designed, so I accepted. I moved into the chairman’s office, and Stone moved into a more secluded spot. With his international interests, he traveled widely and so had little direct influence on department affairs, and I endeavored to continue in the direction he had established.
