ABSTRACT

On several occasions I searched for promising young mathematicians and recommended them for appointment to the math staff if there was no vacancy in the department. For example, I met Richard Lashof at Columbia when he was finishing his thesis there, and recommended him to Northrop; he soon joined the staff. While at Chicago, he collaborated with Eldon Dyer in topology to formulate the so-called Dyer-Lashof operations in topology, so good mathematics resulted.
