ABSTRACT

In 1939, Kistiakowski was elected to membership in the National Academy of Science and in 1965 became vice president of the Academy and served two four-year terms in that office. Kistiakowski had noted that many reports of the National Research Council did not involve much input or oversight from members of the Academy, so during his vice presidency, he took the lead in establishing two new Academy committees: the Committee on Science and Public Policy (COSPUP) and the Report Review Committee (RRC).
