ABSTRACT

This article describes and demonstrates synthesis techniques that were used in the early 1980s to make sound for coin-operated entertainment products and later for VideoWorks, a Macintosh program that was the predecessor of Director. I created sound in this manner for eight coin-op video games including the classic Q*BERT (see Appendix A accompanying this article). Three synthesis algorithms, sequencer/synth “Rock Guitar,” filtered noise “Explosion,” and enveloped FM synthesizer “MultiSynth,” will be described including code examples. The full C-based implementation of these synthesizers is available on the CD-ROM accompanying this book.
