ABSTRACT

The microphone is a source of mystique-even among sound engineers. Many seasoned audio professionals have a talent for achieving excellent results with a microphone despite not truly understanding the finer details of how it actually functions. Microphones are not only the concern of professional sound engineers-we all are surrounded by microphones in almost every facet of our lives. Telephones, cell phones, intercoms, answering machines and computers are common communication devices that rely on the ability to turn our voices into electrical signals that can be transferred with ease to an intended listener.
