A complex set of factors that refl ect individual, social, and cultural elements is required to understand women’s participation in IT in a global context. Failures to adopt this perspective often result in accounts that implicitly or explicitly blame women for their underrepresentation in many STEM fi elds, excluding rather than considering teaching and learning experiences that fail to motivate young girls. This is a point made by one of the discussants, Jane Butler Kahle , at the 2005 international IT conference.
