The Unmaking of a President: How an Election Mandate Was Upset

The assessment I offered at the end of Chapter 4 of the resilience of the twoparty system to the ups and downs of each party is perhapsmost seriously challenged in recent times by the events of Watergate. All the presidential abuses of power evoked by the name “Watergate” certainly cast doubt on the ability of the election process to displace an incumbent president determined to hold onto power.
