ABSTRACT

Th e three characters provided in the odd application fi eld are, actually, arrows pointing Up, Right, and Left, respectively. Th e fi rst letters of these three words are “U”, “R”, and “L”, which together are the common three-letter acronym “URL.” In other words, the applicant fi lled in this fi eld with the URL address of his website. Of course, it can be interpreted that the arrows point to the North, East, and West, resulting in the word NEW. But, since the hint states that the fi eld was not NEW to the applicant, “URL” is the only relevant meaning of the code.

Every triangle in each small square is pointing at a line segment on the opposite side of the square, as shown in the small diagram. In some cases a line segment is common to two adjacent squares, so two triangles are pointing at it. As a result we can write eight letters that, starting from the top left one and going clockwise, spell SOLUTION. Th e pattern in the middle square gives the shape of a key.
