ABSTRACT
Supernova explosions are very prominent phenomena which are already found recorded in ancient chronicles. The name nova derives from the Latin word meaning “new” and refers to the sudden appearance of a star where it was not observed earlier. This “new” appearance is due to the event of a nova explosion, during which the luminosity of the star increases by many orders of magnitude. It becomes visible over very large distances, even when it occurs in other galaxies.
