ABSTRACT
In ancient times most mathematicians were also physicists and vice versa, Newton being only the most famous example. But starting with the twentieth century, there have been fewer examples of a single person straddling both fields. The modern university usually has well-defined and separate mathematics and physics departments which consider themselves to be in pursuit of very distinct goals.
