ABSTRACT

Man-made reservoirs are strategically important aquatic ecosystems, since in addition to the theoretical limnological and ecological basis they provide, they are used for many and varied purposes that affect the water quality, operating mechanisms and succession of aquatic communities in rivers and drainage basins. Of key importance in the functioning of reservoirs and their physical, chemical and biological properties are type of construction, retention time, the fi lling period, and impact of the multiple uses on the water quality in these ecosystems.
