The Brassica genus belongs to the Brassicaceae family (previously known as Cruciferae) and economically is the most important genus within the tribe Brassiceae, consisting of 37 different species. The taxonomy of this genus is complex. Gómez-Campo (1999) presented a complete classifi cation of the genus Brassica and its allied genera, indicating subgenera, sections, species and subspecies.
