ABSTRACT

Engineering and management aspects of urban water require utilizing technical tools and techniques that are classified here as simulation, optimization, and economic techniques. Engineering applications primarily use analysis and design models. The overlay between engineering and management tools in urban water is simulation models, which can be used to test the performance of urban water systems. Another simulation technique that has received a great deal of attention is system dynamics utilizing object-oriented programming, which are discussed in Chapter 10, to simulate in a physical-mathematical fashion the behavior of an urban system under different design and operation alternatives. There are certain inserts in this chapter from the Karamouz et al. (2003) book that are adopted for urban planning and management. In the remaining of this chapter, stochastic simulation methods as well as neural networks are introduced. Then the conventional and evolutionary optimization techniques are introduced. It is followed by an introduction to fuzzy modeling. Finally, the basic economic models for urban water systems are described.
