ABSTRACT

Adipose tissue, or fat, is a loose connective tissue that serves many purposes,

both structural and functional, in the body. It is primarily composed of adipo-

cytes, or fat-containing cells, as well as leukocytes, macrophages, blood vessels,

and fibroblastic cells, which are all held together in an array of collagen fibers.

There are two forms of adipose tissue in mammals: white adipose tissue, which

forms most adult adipose tissue, and brown adipose tissue.
