ABSTRACT
As an introduction to the fracture in the nano-scale, this chapter briefly describes the fundamentals of fracture mechanics, which was developed to describe fractures in macroscopic materials. The chapter covers two main subjects: (a) the singular stress field that brings about the fracture (Sections 2.2-2.5) and (b) applications for a variety of cracking phenomena (Section 2.6).
