ABSTRACT

Time measurement achieved using a clock is, simply the measurement of the length of time, i.e., of the distance between two moments in time. In order to be measured, time is required to be temporarily stopped. Someone transmitting the phonetic model “time” expects that the receiver, if he or she belongs to a society using the same language, connects the same model of the memory to the shared phonetic model. Time, as a symbol, is a way of orientation that has been socially institutionalized. According to the etymology chronos is the time as length, or interval: it is the time shown by the chronometers, by the clocks, which can be translated into a discontinuous sequence of dots over a line. Although chronos has been handed down, through Latin, in every Roman language, kairos has remained anchored to classic Greek.
