ABSTRACT

The fi rst step in generating a genetic linkage map is to create an appropriate segregating mapping population. Two individuals of the same, or closely related species, with variation in the expression of a trait(s) are crossed to generate a mapping population. Doubled haploids, F2, recombinant inbred lines (RILs) and backcross populations are among the most commonly used mapping populations (Collard et al. 2005).
