ABSTRACT

The concept of chaos is one of the major discoveries of recent times. Chaos is observed in day-to-day life, in the areas of metrology, fluid flow (turbulence), cardiology, population biology, the stock market, economic modeling, and so on. Predictions are possible in many systems. For example, eclipses can be predicted thousands of years in advance. The motion of a simple pendulum (under suitable assumptions), which is governed by a differential equation, is predictable and a closed-form solution can be written. However, there are many natural phenomena which are not predictable, such as weather predictions, roll of dice, and so forth, even though they obey the same laws of physics.
