ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces a key set of immunological molecules encoded by a linked set of genes known as the major histocompatibility complex. The primary importance of these molecules is in the phenomenon of antigen presentation, which will be discussed in Chapter 7. Here we consider the biology of the molecules and their encoding genes, the important role of these molecules in tissue transplantation and their association with phenotypic traits such as disease susceptibility.
