ABSTRACT

This chapter has several goals. First, we cover the concept of pigment-based chemotaxonomy and its use of internal pigment ratios to derive taxon-specifi c chlorophyll-a contributions to a microalgal, here periphyton, community. Second, we introduce and review methods and a variety of real or potential problems associated with pigment-based chemotaxonomy. Third, we hope that this chapter can serve as a source for those studying photosynthetic pigments in the various microalgal communities and ecotones of the Everglades and other subtropical ecosystems.
